The Fact That Narcissistic Abuse Couldn’t Turn You Evil is Insane
You did not become kinder because the abuse was good for you. There was nothing good about it. You became more deliberate because you know the cost of cruelty. You know what it does to someone when they’re constantly made to feel like a burden. You know what it’s like to reread a message ten times, wondering what you did wrong. You know what it feels like to go to sleep with your heart racing because someone decided your nervous system is where they’ll dump their anger. You know what it feels like to become smaller and quieter just to keep peace in a room where peace was never really available.
So when you have power over someone else’s feelings, you notice it. You’re careful with it. You don’t enjoy watching people beg for reassurance. You don’t deliberately keep people confused so they become easier to control. You don’t need another person to lose themselves so you can feel important.
And maybe that’s the cleanest proof that you didn’t become them. After narcissistic abuse, you don’t just know what cruelty looks like—you know how it’s done. You know how someone can punish you without raising their voice. How they can ruin an entire evening with one look and tell everyone nothing happened. How they can withdraw affection until you’re desperate enough to abandon your own position. How they can keep changing the story until you’re no longer arguing about what they did. You’re defending your right to be hurt by it.
You’ve seen how easy it is to take a loving person and slowly train them to doubt their instincts. You know the tricks now because you survived being on the receiving end of them. The frightening thing is that abuse gave you an education you never asked for.
