All of those things can work—and you learned that a method working is sometimes the strongest reason never to use it. That’s a kind of wisdom narcissistic people never develop. They measure behavior by what it gets them. You started measuring behavior by what it costs another human being.
So now there are things you simply can’t enjoy anymore. You can’t enjoy someone becoming smaller around you. You can’t feel important because another person is desperate for your approval. You can’t confuse obedience with respect.
And that’s where your goodness became something much more serious than niceness. Own that fully.
