This escalation is sometimes accompanied by acts of vandalism and physical or mental abuse. The narcissist aims for revenge and tries to inflict pain, believing your departure and reclaiming control over your own life is a personal affront. They want to make you suffer in the same way they believe you caused them pain.
To accomplish this, the narcissist may cunningly manipulate their entourage of flying monkeys to carry out harassment and continued control.
At the core is a desperate need for validation and vindication. The narcissist refuses to allow you the power to reject or undermine them. They cannot bear to see their privileges stripped away or their reputation tarnished in the eyes of others.
So they may go to any lengths necessary to hurt you—simply to witness your suffering.
One of the most potent ways narcissists inflict pain is by introducing a new source of admiration and attention. They flood social media with posts that prominently showcase their new partner, intentionally parading them before your friends and family. The message is clear: they have moved on, implying that you were broken and undeserving.
This tactic plants seeds of doubt in you. It makes you question whether this new supply is receiving what you wanted. However, it’s important to understand that the new supply may not receive everything they desire either.
The narcissist may withhold certain aspects or create a sense of scarcity and unfulfilled needs to keep the new supply hooked and seeking validation. The presence of a new supply often acts as a triggering mechanism—an attempt to provoke you into chasing after them, boosting the narcissist’s fragile ego and temporarily soothing their insecurities.
They crave the validation that comes from someone still pursuing them, especially when people close to them have been pushed away. The entrance of a new supply conveniently distracts the narcissist and helps them shift their attention to the next conquest or target. In their mind, this new person will fix everything—even though they’re often blissfully unaware of the tumultuous history or the truth about the narcissist’s underlying patterns.
