The narcissist may also manipulate the narrative, casting themselves as the victim and avoiding responsibility for their past actions. Contrary to popular belief, many assume that once the narcissist finds a new supply, they won’t attempt to return. But this isn’t always the case.
The presence of a new supply doesn’t necessarily resolve ingrained issues or change the narcissist’s core nature. You might find yourself wondering if they truly changed—until they contact you again, reenter your life, and engage with you.
This persistent behavior can be attributed to Hoovering tactics, a defining characteristic of narcissistic behavior. Even when the narcissist is involved in new relationships or has children with others, they may still keep lines of communication open with their previous supply.
Their primary objective remains the same: exploiting those interactions for emotional, physical, or sexual satisfaction. They often feel exhilarated by maintaining connections with former entanglements.
At times, you may encounter moments where the narcissist pleads and begs to re-enter your life. This can be confusing because you’re left asking, “Why are they begging now?” They may have discarded you earlier and shown little concern about your departure. But in many cases, their begging is simply another manipulation tactic. Their pleas aim to regain control—driven by frustration over losing it and by their entitled mindset.
They may attempt to persuade you to reconcile. But once they feel they’ve regained the upper hand, the begging may abruptly stop. Their communication may gradually diminish, and they may even ghost you.
