Two: they assassinate your character behind closed doors. This is an upgraded version of their normal smear campaign, because it’s driven by revenge, and it’s one of the darkest preparations they make. And this is one you may know nothing about while it’s happening in front of you.
They speak very politely. They smile. They behave normally. They pretend that things between you are finally improving. But the second you leave the room, they completely become obsessed with destroying your credibility in the shadows. They will spend ridiculous amounts of time calling your mutual friends, messaging family members, and retelling old stories to make you look bad. They will heavily exaggerate your past mistakes, invent dark motives for your innocent actions, and give people a completely distorted, crazy version of you.
Sometimes the lies they tell are so extreme that when you finally hear them weeks later, your first reaction is not even anger. It is pure disbelief. You can’t believe another human being could fabricate something that shamelessly. But they don’t just want people to dislike you. Their actual goal is to plant a tiny seed of doubt. They want to put enough doubt in people’s minds that even someone who has known you for 10 years pauses for a second and generally wonders if you are the one causing all the problems. They’re isolating you by destroying your good name before you even get the chance to speak.
